How Much Does SEO Cost in France (2026): Real Figures, and What No Source Measures
What does SEO actually cost in France? A €5,000 median across 683 real budgets, day rates from €185 to €497 depending on the platform, and a median backlink at €87. Every figure with its source, its bias, and the five factors that make quotes vary by a factor of 14. French market data only.
Short answer: the most solid figure available in France is a median of €5,000 per SEO project, measured across 683 real budgets. Half of all projects cost less, a quarter cost less than €2,500, and the most expensive 10% exceed €30,000. But before using that number to judge a quote, there is something almost nobody writes down: no neutral source publishes SEO rates in France.
One warning before you read on: these are French market figures. If you are buying SEO in the US or UK, the ranges differ and these numbers do not transfer. Everything below is measured on French agencies, French freelance platforms and the French link market, and is useful to you only if that is the market you are buying in.
The caveat every pricing roundup skips
There is no independent public barometer in France, no official rate card, and nothing resembling a national statistics office figure for SEO pricing. The French SEO professional association publishes no public pricing barometer. The direct consequence: every number in circulation comes from players who sell the service or the introduction — freelance platforms, agency comparison sites, and trade media that also sell training.
The only two genuinely neutral sources on the subject, Google and France Num (a French public service), give no prices at all. That is useful information in itself: when a site tells you "SEO costs X", it is selling you something. The figures below are therefore given with their source, their method and their bias, so you can weight them yourself.
What an SEO project actually costs
The most usable measurement comes from La Fabrique du Net, which publishes the distribution of 683 real project budgets reported by agencies, corroborated by 263 client reviews that mention a budget. It is an agency comparison site, so it has a stake in the answer, but it is the only source publishing a full distribution rather than a vague range.
| Benchmark | Project budget |
|---|---|
| Cheapest 10% | €1,250 |
| First quartile | €2,500 |
| Median | €5,000 |
| Third quartile | €10,500 |
| Most expensive 10% | €30,000 |
Almost half of all projects (48.8%) stay under €5,000, and 70% stay under €10,000. By company size, the median moves from €3,500 for a micro-business to €5,000 for a small or mid-sized company, €15,000 for a mid-cap and €17,500 for a large group. By duration: €2,500 for an engagement shorter than three months, €6,150 from three to six months, €10,000 beyond six months. If you want to know which bracket your own site falls into before you talk to anyone, send us the URL and the queries you care about.
Do not confuse this budget with a retainer. The frequently quoted monthly figure of €800 to €2,000 excluding VAT for a small or mid-sized company is, by its own source's admission, "a reconstruction (total budget ÷ duration), not a directly measured data point". Nobody measures SEO retainers in France.
Day rates: two sources, a 1-to-2.7 gap
This is where most articles go wrong by quoting a single number. The two French platforms that publish a barometer flatly contradict each other:
- Malt: €497 average day rate — but only across consultants who are experienced and active in the past three months, on 2,683 profiles. The progression by seniority is clear: €281 at 0-2 years, €363 at 3-7 years, €497 at 8-15 years, €592 beyond 15 years. Paris sits at €527, Lyon at €482, Bordeaux at €455.
- Codeur.com: €185 average day rate — across more than 5,000 freelancers, a much wider base that includes entry-level profiles. Junior €105, senior €280.
The gap is not an error: the two platforms are simply not measuring the same population. What it mainly means is that a "French average SEO day rate" quoted without its scope tells you nothing. A widely circulated figure of €570, attributed to a Malt or FreelanceRepublik study, is moreover nowhere to be found in a primary source and contradicts the data Malt publishes itself: better not to use it.
Individual deliverables
Backlinks. This is the best-documented data point on the market: the median price of a backlink in France is €87, according to a Link Finder study covering more than 400,000 sites across 30 marketplaces, published by Abondance in July 2025. That is the lowest price in Europe, against a worldwide median of roughly €180: €160 in the United States and the United Kingdom, €230 in Spain, €290 in Italy, €430 in Germany. A real advantage for anyone investing in link building on a French-speaking market.
Audits. Abondance publishes worked examples of audits actually delivered: €2,400 for a 50-page site over two weeks, €2,900 for a media site of more than 2,000 pages over one month, €7,900 for a media group of three sites over two months. Codeur places a basic agency audit between €500 and €2,500, and a detailed audit above €3,000. Technical auditing is part of what we do, so treat those figures as a benchmark rather than a quote.
Per-word copywriting. The ranges in circulation (€0.08 to €0.30 per word) come exclusively from writers' and agencies' blogs, with no study and no sample. La Fabrique du Net says so explicitly about unit prices per link or per article: "our barometer does not measure it". Treat these as advertised rates, never as market data.
Why a quote can vary by a factor of 14
Five factors are measured across the 683 budgets: duration, company size, industry, region and the services included. The spread runs "from a one-off local engagement at €2,500 to a large account on a one-year contract above €35,000".
The regional effect is clear and quantified: a €7,000 median in Île-de-France against €4,000 in the rest of France, or 1.75 times more. Note that the often-quoted "Paris premium of 15 to 25%" corresponds to no measurement at all: on day rates, the gap between Paris and the national average reported by Malt is only 6%. The sector effect tracks competition and the value of a won customer: €12,750 in the public sector, €6,000 in e-commerce and industry, €5,500 in B2B and SaaS, €3,000 in health and wellness.
Three signals for judging an SEO quote
First signal: a ranking promise is a red flag, not a selling point. Google writes that "no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google" and explicitly advises being wary of SEOs who promise top rankings or claim to have a special relationship with Google. France Num, a public service, issues the same warning against promises of spectacular results in record time.
Second signal: the detail of the deliverable. A fixed project fee is the most common model (91.8% of agencies offer it), but a fixed fee with no breakdown of days per task makes comparison impossible. Ask what gets produced, not what gets promised.
Third signal: the timeline being announced. France Num points out that visibility "represents a medium- to long-term investment", and that techniques delivering short-term results expose a site to lasting penalties. A provider announcing results within a few weeks is selling you a risk. If a quote on your desk fails one of these three signals, we will read it with you before you sign, and point you to the part of our expertise that matches the work actually being described.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average price of SEO in France?
There is no reliable average price, and quoting a single number would be misleading. The most solid data available is a median of €5,000 per project, calculated by La Fabrique du Net across 683 real budgets reported by agencies. Half of all projects fall below that amount, a quarter below €2,500, and the most expensive 10% exceed €30,000. One caveat: this is a total project budget, not a monthly subscription. These are French market figures.
How much does monthly SEO support cost?
The order of magnitude quoted for a small or mid-sized company is €800 to €2,000 excluding VAT per month, but you should know where that number comes from: its source, La Fabrique du Net, states itself that it is a reconstruction (total budget divided by duration) rather than a directly measured monthly fee. No public study measures SEO retainers in France directly. A provider quoting you a monthly rate should be able to detail what they produce each month — otherwise you are paying for a presence, not for work.
What is the daily rate of a freelance SEO consultant in France?
The two French platforms that publish rate barometers contradict each other, and you need to know that before negotiating. Malt reports an average day rate of €497, but only across its experienced, active consultants (base: 2,683 profiles). Codeur.com reports €185, across a base of more than 5,000 freelancers that includes many entry-level profiles. That is a 1-to-2.7 ratio for the same job. Quoting 'the average day rate of an SEO consultant' without naming the platform and its scope is therefore meaningless.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
Projects that include an audit have a median of €5,000 at La Fabrique du Net, but that is the budget for the entire project, not for the audit alone. For audits invoiced separately, Abondance publishes worked examples: €2,400 for a 50-page site over two weeks, €2,900 for a media site of more than 2,000 pages over one month, and €7,900 for a media group of three sites over two months. Codeur places a basic agency audit between €500 and €2,500. All of these sources sell SEO services: these are advertised rates, not market measurements.
Why do quotes vary so much from one provider to another?
La Fabrique du Net identifies five factors across its 683 budgets: the length of the engagement, company size, industry, region, and the services included. The observed spread runs from 1 to 14, from a one-off local engagement at €2,500 to a large account on a one-year contract above €35,000. The regional effect is measured: a €7,000 median in Île-de-France against €4,000 in the rest of France, or 1.75 times more. The sector effect tracks competition and the value of a won customer: €12,750 in the public sector against €3,000 in health and wellness.
How much does a backlink cost in France?
The median price of a backlink in France is €87, according to a Link Finder study relayed by Abondance in July 2025, covering more than 400,000 sites across 30 link-building marketplaces. That is the lowest price in Europe, against a worldwide median of roughly €180: €160 in the United States and the United Kingdom, €230 in Spain, €290 in Italy, €430 in Germany. Worth noting: the breakdown by topic often attributed to this study (finance or health being more expensive) does not appear in the source article.
Is performance-based SEO a good idea?
No serious source puts a number on it, and it does not even appear among the models declared by the 368 agencies listed by La Fabrique du Net. On the substance, Google states in plain terms that 'no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google' and advises being wary of SEOs who promise top rankings or claim a special relationship with Google. France Num, a French public service, issues the same warning against promises of spectacular results in record time.
How do SEO agencies bill their work?
Across 368 agencies that declared their models to La Fabrique du Net: 91.8% offer a fixed project fee, 64.7% a dedicated team, 59.5% a monthly retainer, 51.1% training, and only 28.5% day-rate billing. One important caveat, which the source publishes itself: only 13.7% of the listed agencies filled in this field, so the base is self-selected.
Positioning your project before asking for a quote
The figures above serve one purpose: telling you whether a quote sits inside or outside the French market, and why. Monthly support at €800 for a small company in a competitive sector and a €7,900 audit for a media group are both perfectly coherent — they simply do not fund the same work. And again, they describe France: a quote priced in dollars or pounds should be benchmarked against its own market, not against this page.
If you are unsure what level of investment fits your site, a 30-minute conversation is usually enough to clarify what is actually holding your visibility back: a technical indexing problem, a lack of content on the queries that convert, or insufficient authority. Those three causes call for neither the same work nor the same budget. You can also review the detail of our areas of expertise to see what falls under SEO and what falls under development.
If your question is broader than an SEO engagement — a rebuild, a new site, an application — the ranges are in our guide to the budget for a custom web development project, and in our breakdown of custom mobile app development cost. If you are still deciding who should do the work, our comparison of working with an agency or a freelancer covers the trade-offs behind the day rates above. When you are ready to put numbers on your own project, tell us what you are trying to rank for and we will tell you which of the three causes applies.
